when painting over that 70ish dark wood style be  prepared to at least use 2 to 3 coats of paint & one of them being a primer. for the best finish, a spray application would be more of a professional look. in preparation of doing this you will need to use sanding sponges, 1 inch white tape and 2 inch blue tape. the tape is a little expensive but overall it will ensure when you remove it that you won’t get the sticky residue that adheres from the white tape when preping for  areas to be sprayed. it’s always good to buy cardboard spray shields or make them yourself from unuseful cardboard boxes laying around. if you don’t have them laying around you can always buy am from the paint store and they’re really inexpensive but save you a great deal of time.
